The Beam family of Burleson, Texas leads what appears to be a happy, contented, storybook life. Christy Beam (Jennifer Garner), a young mother lovingly devoted to her three daughters, Abbie (Brighton Sharbino), Anna (Kylie Rogers) and Adelynn (Courtney Fansler), tends to the needs of her kids and the family homestead, while her veterinarian husband, Kevin (Martin Henderson), works long and hard to meet the demands of his newly expanded farm-based practice. They’re grateful for their many blessings, success they attribute directly to their devout Christian faith.

The mystery of growing up explored in uneven ‘Boyhood’
by Brent Marchant July 25, 2014Figuring out what makes life work occupies much of our time and attention in our formative years. Coming to understand the world around us and how it emerges into being is a formidable task for our young minds, especially when it doesn’t seem to make sense. A noble attempt at broaching that subject provides the focus of one of the summer’s most anticipated new releases, director Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood.”

Continuing on a mini-road trip through Texas, I checked out Greune. Another German settlement from the mid-1800’s, Greune boasts some real history and buildings that still stand from the time, housing full fledged businesses. One of which is Greune Hall that you may recognize from some big Hollywood films! Along with the entertainment, history and shopping, you’ll find some good eats for all sorts of traveling foodies!

Nutritious Noshing in New Braunfels by Carolyn Scott Hamilton
by Carolyn August 2, 2012Last time I was in Texas, I got the chance to do a tiny bit of road tripping and I stumbled upon New Braunfels. Just outside of San Antonio in Texas Hill Country, this quaint town was settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800′s. With some real American history that can still be seen in parts of downtown, New Braunfels is best known for being the home of Schlitterbahn, a killer water park complete with water roller coaster! But the best part is that amongst the water flumes and ghosts of America’s past, you’ll find some delicious and nutritious grub!

I left my heart in Austin, Texas! I know the song says San Francisco but Austin is a great American city that is not only the progressive, college and music town state capital, it’s also super health conscious, green and mega vegan friendly. A Texas city like no other, Austin is home to the headquarters and first Whole Foods Market, The University of Texas Longhorns, IBM, Google, Facebook and Apple as well as being the live music capital of the world. In addition to all of the creative goings on, the city is buzzing with youth what with all of the hip neighborhoods that combine living and businesses such as quaint coffee shops, gourmet restaurants and cool bars tucked in all boroughs of the city. Located on the Colorado River (AKA Lady Bird Lake), Austinites enjoy their city, and their health, by biking the river trail, kayaking or even swimming in their city center natural spring.

READ: Where To Dine Healthily in Johnson City, Texas by Carolyn Scott Hamilton
by Carolyn April 20, 2012Johnson City, Texas. Just an hour or so northwest of San Antonio, located in the beautiful rolling hill country, this is the small town that president Lyndon Baines Johnson grew up in. Being a history geek, along with my hubby, we took a day trip up to see LBJ’s boyhood home as well as to see the sprawling acreage at his Texas White House about 20 minutes west of there.

We crammed so much in during our Race to the Alamotrip to San Antonio that I had to post another article on all the great places to dine while in this awesome Texas town!
I must give big props to Hotel Contessa, for having great veggie options for breakfast as well as at their restaurant. Every morning, I dined on cereal or oatmeal with soy milk, fresh oj and fruit. At the bar, I ordered a delicious Spanish chick pea appetizer that staved off my hunger and put a smile on my face. The hotel was beautiful, right on the Riverwalk and their rooftop pool took the cake!

Overlong ‘Tree of Life’ needs its branches trimmed
by Brent Marchant June 7, 2011As ascendant beings who ultimately seek the source from which we came, not unlike the trees that so patiently yet determinedly reach for the life-sustaining sunlight of the sky, we’re innately committed to the search for meaningful guidance that will assist us in this journey.
