For Those Who Have Lost a Pet
I wrote this poem for a friend who was forced to say good-bye to her long- time friend. I could see the anguish in her face and realized that grief extends beyond human life. A pet can provide love and loyalty equal to or greater than any human companion. For this reason I wrote “A Special Friend”
A SPECIAL FRIEND
I lost a very special friend
His loyalty was true
His love had no conditions
No matter what I’d do
Those big brown eyes would say it
They’d tell me how he cared
He did not have to speak at all
Those quiet moments shared
I raised him when he was a pup
And watched him as he grew
The trust and adoration shown
The like I never knew
Years went by I watched him age
I knew the time was near
His movements very laboured
I would lose a friend I feared
That day did come and he passed on
I could not make him stay
My heart was filled with loneliness
I missed his loving ways
I thought it was forever
He was gone eternally
But then I felt him by side
A warmth against my knee
As days went by I realized
His spirit still remained
For every day he’d find a way
To show me nothing’s changed
My dear old friend is living still
His love that will not die
I know he visits every day
And by my feet he lies
