Oprah Winfrey sits down with NBA Championship coach and New York Times bestselling author, Phil Jackson, to discuss his latest memoir, “Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success.” The son of two Pentecostal ministers, Jackson was groomed to follow in his parent’s footsteps. Using the game of basketball as an escape, he would soon find his true calling on the court. While attending the University of North Dakota on a basketball scholarship, he expanded his own beliefs and started experimenting with Christian mysticism, Native American rituals, and Zen meditation. Incorporating these principles into his coaching, Jackson led the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers to a combined eleven championships and is hailed as one of the greatest NBA coaches in history.
During this candid conversation, Jackson opens up about his strict religious upbringing and his own spiritual quest. Jackson also explains how he used meditation and other mindful approaches to help some of the league’s biggest superstars play with clarity, focus and calm.
Plus, in this week’s ‘Breathing Space,’ we visit the serene shores of Montana’s Flathead Lake, one the places Jackson feels most at home.
