Dancing is a physical expression of our creativity. Creativity is one of our most useful tools we have in healing and sustaining ourselves. Dancing is creative movement. We know that movement helps us to live a more empowered, healthy and fulfilling life. Dancing is a wonderful way to incorporate more movement into our lives.
But I Can’t Dance
How often do we hear that – from others, from ourselves. “I can’t dance. I don’t have any rhythm.” I believe we are all naturally creative. I believe we all have the ability to tap into the high vibrational energy of creativity through dance. No two or three year old says, “I can’t dance.” It is a learned, limiting belief. We pick it up by comparing ourselves to others, and when we internalize negative feedback.
When we do not have meaningful movement in our lives, our sense of aliveness can turn into listlessness, distraction, boredom, and anxiety. Many turn to food, drugs, alcohol and other non-productive activities to try to reduce their apathy and anxiety. Those things only give us short lived relief and often carry consequences much graver than doing nothing at all. Those activities do not allow us to listen to our spirits. And when our spirits are not heard, imbalance can easily happen. Dance is a fun and healthy alternative for releasing stress and in getting us moving in positive ways.
Dance As Creative Self-Expression
More than simple movement, dance is the act of creative self-expression. It is a powerful, vibrant action. Dancing can give us the opportunity to give expression to our spirits. Creativity is the opportunity to communicate with our true spirit. Dance allows us to express our own awesome and unique version of our spirit through movement. Creativity has its own language. Movement reaches us in ways that words cannot. Creative expression through dance can provide relief, understanding, wonder and even inner peace. Dancing can support us in living empowered and passionate lives.
Saying yes to any creative endeavor can be powerful and healing. Dancing can help us understand who we are and what we feel. Dancing can awaken our spirits. When our spirits are awake and alert, they can have beautiful, unspoken conversations with our bodies. Our spirits align with our bodies in dance.
Dancing Is Energy In Motion
Dancing is a very effective way to move emotional energy through our bodies. When we give expression to our dark, heavy or dense feelings, such as stress or anxiety – we can feel the relief of release. Great burdens can be lifted as we let go of the heavy, dense emotions we build up throughout our days. We can put that energy in motion by transferring emotions into dance. Dance can support us in taking charge of how we experience our emotions and how we feel about our reactions to the world around us. Dance can clear our paths for healing, positivity and health.
How The Dance Works
Start off with a warm up and really stretch out your body. Playing music you love is a key. You can make a playlist just for shaking out dense emotions with some of your favorite music. It does not have to be fast – or slow – it can be absolutely any kind of music. Just as long as you love it.
Get lost in the movement with wild abandonment. Your dance is a beautiful expression of you. Do not criticize yourself. Do not try to make your dance “better” or “perfect.” You do not need to learn any steps or any moves. Do it your way. Give yourself full permission to dance just exactly the way you dance. Your dance is beautiful. Do not put any pressure on yourself. Allow the process to be simple and fun. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to dance. If you enjoy it, it is right.
Dance With Joy
Dancing can be a boost for our entire being. It taps into all of the areas of our brains and wakes our spirits and hearts. Dance has benefited human beings throughout history. We have reveled in it as ceremony, as spiritual, as entertainment, and as fun. Let’s tap into our creative resources today for some vibrant health. Invite your heart to take the lead in your dance. Let joy be your dance partner. And may your dance be healing, restoring and just plain old fun!

Every word of this is so true. Being a dancer and dance teacher I can be so tired or just can’t do anymore for the day . But soon as I dance my spirit lifts and almost floats. My class has been taught that every one of them are beautiful and when they start to feel that in their heart they dance with freedom. Thank you so much Dyan for your article. Many Blessings and Much Love. Love Dot
