“What we say to our children becomes their inner voice” (Peggy Omara)
We all have an inner voice. It is that little voice in your head, and sometimes, your heart. There can be two sides to our inner voice, sort of its very own yin and yang. One side is our intuition. It is our intuition that is the voice of our higher self, along with spirit, guiding us for our highest good. This is the voice that guides us to turn from fear, anger, hatred and all forms of negativity. This is the voice that guides us toward compassion, understanding and unconditional love; no matter what the circumstance. Our intuition is who we truly are; it is our soul.
The opposite of our intuition is our ego. This voice is can be filled with fear and negativity; guiding you away from your intuition. The basis for these messages, in great part, comes from what we learn as a child. It is this information that forms our subconscious beliefs about ourselves, others and the world. “What we say to our children becomes their inner voice”.
As a child, I was surrounded by fear based messages from many adults in my life. My family members worried about everything. They were suspicious of others, anxious and often angered easily. I would frequently hear statements filled with negativity like “life is not fair”, “you have to struggle to get ahead”, and, “children should be seen and not heard”. It was a difficult to witness and I longed to be different than them.
Despite my desire to be the opposite of my childhood mentors, I eventually became very similar in my thinking and speaking for many, many years. Their words became my inner voice. But my intuition was still there, guiding me, although I didn’t always follow it. The voice of our higher selves is always present, but sometimes the noise of negativity can drown it out. When life became nearly intolerable due to my angry words and behavior, it was by following my intuition that I found a new paradigm in the pages of many books.
It was through books that I learned about the power of our thoughts and words. My awakening was guided by spirit at the hands of many teachers and through them I discovered how to connect with my intuition and change my inner voice. By understanding that I was not defined by what I learned as a child, I was able to choose optimism and turn away from fear and pain. The two sides of my inner voice became united, and the one that was driven by what others taught me early in life no longer drowned out the voice of my intuition.
As a mother, I wanted a more positive formative experience for my children. Inspired by the books that influenced my awakening and following the guidance of my intuitive inner voice, I wrote a book called “Truth Works, Divine Life Lessons for Kids of All Ages”, to help young people learn about their inner voice and the power of their thoughts and words; along with the adults who raise and care for them. This is an excerpt from the book’s introduction:
In childhood, we receive many lessons. An enormous amount of our beliefs are formed in our early life years. We learn from lots of different resources; parents, friends, relatives, teachers, television, music, books and so on. Much of what we are taught and experience becomes part of our subconscious mind. This is the part of our brain that is running the show 24/7. In other words, it is your subconscious mind that is in control and no matter what you are thinking or doing in your conscious or awake mind. The beliefs we have stored here, positive or negative, have an immense effect on our entire life.
Awareness is the gateway to changing your beliefs, thoughts and words; to changing your life. Your inner voice may be a result of what you were exposed to in the past, but that does not mean you are stuck. You can begin to change by engaging with Spirit and tuning into your intuition. You can ask spirit to make you aware of any negative beliefs, thoughts and speech. Follow your intuitive feelings when they arise about habitual negative words in your thinking. Once you are cognizant, you can change.
My book outlines many typical phrases that society has headed down generation after generation; like the ones that I heard as a child (see paragraph 3). Statements like can be used routinely, laying a foundation for self-sabotage and a damaging inner voice. We can change this tradition and give our future generations an inner voice that is aligned with our loving intuition and spirit, changing our world in a vital and positive way. Imagine a world where each person has an inner voice that is loving, supportive, uplifting and positive. Make it a reality today by beginning with yourself. What you say to yourself every day is your inner voice, and that voice is what you give to the world; you share it with our children.
