It was Ghandi said those famous words “Be the change you want to see in the world.” What exactly did he mean by them? How can one person begin to change the world in any way?
The truth is that change must begin with everyone of us. If we waited for someone else to take that first step and to make a difference, then nothing would ever get done. All change starts with individuals who have ideas and who act on those ideas.
You don’t have to be an activist or rich and famous to have an impact on the world. There are small changes that you can make in your life every day to create a ripple effect of change in the world. Here are three simple ways you can begin.
1. Reasons vs. Results – which side of this equation are you on? Have you set goals in the past and not reached them? Were you on your way and some obstacle came up and you decided that the goal was unreachable so you quit? Focusing on the reasons why you couldn’t achieve something will never get you the results you dream about. The easiest way to achieve a goal is to look at obstacles as opportunities for learning and celebrate them because you know you are on the road to the goal.
If you have an idea that you think will create a better life for you and those around you, then act on it! Don’t just sit there and think about it! Get up and take the first step and every day take additional steps to make it happen.
2. Focus on what you do want – our thoughts create our world. Choose thoughts that are congruent with the outcome you want for yourself and you will attract what you want into your life. If you don’t know what you want then start with what you don’t want. It’s ok to not know. Empty yourself of all the things you don’t want and then start looking for what you do want. Once you discover what you are passionate about grab onto it and let it take you on the journey you are meant to be on in this life.
3. Ecology of your actions – when setting a goal and deciding to pursue it look at whether your actions will be good for you, your family, your community and the planet. Notice if the end result feels, sounds, or looks right. When you start evaluating what you do from these perspectives it is easy to make the right choice.
When you take responsibility for your actions you live a more balanced and congruent life. You don’t find excuses for not reaching your goals. Instead, you learn at every opportunity and make course corrections as obstacles come up. You know that an obstacle means you are well on your way to where you are meant to go.
At one point you just have to go out and plough that field becuase thinking about it will not get the work done. Rain or shine, follow your results, give up your excuses, and start changing your world into what you want. And notice how the rest of the world follows suit.
