One of our dear students and friends, Allan said Balanced Life Yoga was his “base-camp” – that is the place where he gathers energy, inspiration and camaraderie to face the peaks and valleys of life.
It is wonderful to contribute in some small way to another’s trek through life but also I just love this image. We all need a place where we can gather supplies to sustain our body, mind and spirit. We all need a place where we feel embraced by like-minded people on the journey and we all need a sherpa now and again to help us with our heavy load.
Though I have a slight fear of heights and abhor cold I am obsessed with stories of Everest climbs. I have seen every movie and read almost every book. It is absolutely fascinating to bear witness to human commitment and potential. Someday I would love to visit base-camp in the Himalayas just to witness these rare humans who submit themselves to so much physical and mental preparation and pressure to climb a mountain.
I also take a keen interest in the mind-set of climbers. The thing about climbing is you often need to rely on your team and trust them absolutely. Climbers have to absolutely believe they can make that summit lest the fears overtake them. Climbers must cultivate a reverence for the earth and pay close attention to the messages of our Earth Mother lest their irreverence or arrogance cost them their lives. Climbers must strengthen and stabilize mind and body so neither fails them on that arduous trek. Climbers rejoice in what CAN be done and demonstrate the great depths of human potential. I have no interest in climbing a mountain but I am inspired by it.
So back to base-camp…We can’t all be mountain climbers or extreme sports enthusiasts but perhaps we could all feel inspiration in what WE CAN DO to overcome adversity in our life, believe in our own potential and provide and rely on the assistance of good friends.
- What is your base-camp?
- How do you refuel yourself and others?
- What are your mountains to climb?
Wishing you much ease, stamina and good friends in your journey.
Many blessings and Namaste,
Shasta
