Have you ever asked what it means to just be yourself? The answer to that might seem easy, but maybe not. Have you ever thought to yourself, I’m not quite myself today. What does that mean? Maybe you feel like you have to be a certain person depending on different situations. Are you your sex, the different roles you play in life, your successes and failures? For some us, we can be so practiced at who we think we should be that the question of being our true selves can be surprisingly perplexing. It could also be the most important questions we can ask. What does it mean to be yourself?’
Who am I
As I sit here writing this blog I ask myself, Who am I?
Its life’s most investigated question. World renowned Scientists, Philosophers, Spiritual and Religious deities have been; researching, contemplating, praying and meditating on this simple question for centuries.
Scientists say we’re made of Atoms, pure energy…but where does that come from? World religious heads say we are a creation of God…but where does God come from? Philosophers and Spiritual teachers have entertained theories from; we are one collective energy expressed through many forms, to life is an illusion…but where does that come from?
There are so many theories, philosophies and ideologies floating around in the collective mind that it could cause us to go completely insane. Does this serve us? Does it bring us to the place of peace and contentment that we all seem to be searching for? I don’t believe so. I believe it’s just another thought that causes our individual and collective suffering.
How do we really find out who we are, is it even possible?
I invite you to entertain the thought that it is possible and that you can have access to the answer this very moment.
How can such a profound question that has been researched by some of the greatest minds of our planet be so simple?
It reminds me of a story my good friends and Spiritual teachers Ed and Deb Shapiro tell about the Musk Deer and how it searches round and round the forests of India in search of a particular smell. It exhausts itself searching for miles and miles but can never seem to find where the smell is coming from. The irony of it all is that if it simply stopped looking it would discover that the mysterious smell isn’t out in the forest but coming from its very own anus.
This story is one of the greatest teachings that I have learned on this journey we call life for it teaches us that the answers to all of life’s questions do not come from outside of ourselves but are always right there waiting for us when we simply stop looking.
I invite you right now, wherever you are to take a few moments, close your eyes, allow your lips to touch gently, your tongue to drop from the roof of your mouth, and while breathing in and out of your nose bring your attention to your natural flow of breath…if any thoughts arise, gently allow them to be without judgment, let them pass like clouds in the sky, be still and ask yourself…
Who am I?
Someone You Really Need to Get to Know
There is someone I’m dying for you to really get to know. This person is amazing, insightful, charming, brimming with life, and filled with limitless potential. You’ll be blown away by their depth and capacity for love.
I’d like you to meet… you!
I’m not being facetious. Many of you have lived your lives for your families, careers, short-term objectives, or your long-term dreams and aspirations. Along life’s circuitous path you lost the connection to your inner-being, and back-burnered the real, unedited you. Or you so masterfully prioritized everything else in life you never really got to know the authentic you.
I hear story upon story of how individuals’ entire lives have been lived for those around them. There is a growing imbalance that weighs heavily within people from all around the globe. A life filled with accomplishments and things does not satisfy the deepest hunger. This growing awareness is an internal alarm that will continue to sound until you pay attention.
You are an energetic being. As vibrational beings we are being awakened and called to turn inwards to reclaim our authentic soul signature – a life of harmony, balance and joy.
As the vibration of the planet continues to shift, it is causing everything that is out of alignment with your higher awareness, and all that no longer supports you, to fall away. You are being birthed into your radiant BEINGNESS and I’m honored to midwife this new relationship between who you are today, and the authentic radiant individual you are growing into.
In personal sessions, one of the first things I ask to awaken this awareness is, “what brings you true joy?” Most often, this question is met with dead silence or it becomes a catalyst for the emotional floodgates to open. Many are either clueless or don’t know how begin excavating for these answers.
So, this is your starting point. What is it that brings you joy? Here are some personal exercises to cultivate the most important relationship of all.
- Take a sheet of paper and divide it in half. Label one side “LIKES” and list those things that bring you joy; the activities or connections that bring a smile to your face, warmth to your heart and create a lightness of being as you experience them. On the opposite side label “DISLIKES” and list all the things that leave you feeling empty, lifeless, angry or resentful. Now stop and take a look. On which side of the list are you living the greater percentage of your life?
- If it’s challenging coming up with a list of “LIKES” – (and let me tell you that many people struggle with this exercise) then list those things that you have always wanted to do but have never taken the time to try. Don’t hold back. Be inventive. Have fun. Whether it’s sky diving, traveling to the ruins of Machu Picchu, taking a master class in knitting or going back to college, this is all about you getting to know you.
- Now, commit some time each week to experiencing the activities that make your heart sing. If reading is on the list then spend some time snuggled up with a good book. If sleeping is the ultimate pleasure than take a leisurely afternoon nap. If you’ve longed to learn a foreign language, begin taking a class. You’ll never know what sparks that sense of internal delight until you’re up to your elbows in garden potting soil or spinning wet clay.
- The final step in this four part act where you play the starring role is to take yourself out on dates. Once a week, make a reservation for lunch at a wonderful restaurant, or spend the afternoon watching not just one, but two movies in a row. Treat yourself to a bubble bath, massage or Monday Night Football. If strolling through an art store or a consignment shop reignites a sense of wonder you haven’t experienced since childhood, then get going and begin exploring. The act itself doesn’t matter. The quality time that you spend with you does.
Prioritizing time for you is the opposite of being selfish. It is the ultimate act of love. The more you show up for you, the less you need others to do so. And when you are full from within, there is so much more to give.
Vibrationally the more you dwell in harmony with yourself the more life elevates to meet you. So you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. The universe fully supports this unfolding. There is no better time to explore the miracle that is YOU.
