Quick, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest) how happy are you with your life right now? Are you living the life of your dreams? Are you fulfilling your awesome personal potential? Are you jumping out of bed each morning fueled by a sense of passion and purpose?

As you ask yourself these questions, you may start to feel a little uncomfortable. It is likely you may want to rationalize that icky feeling away. Things aren’t that bad. You have access to many of the things that make life satisfactory and bearable. It may not be “ideal” but it’s fine. One-day things will be different…
I believe that we are all a little too familiar with the stagnant waters of complacency. We spend year after year doing work we don’t love. We spend our time in relationships that we have outgrown, with people who do not uplift and inspire us to be our best. We are frenetically busy, running around in circles with too much to do. We are stressed, anxious, our health is suffering and we feel irritated.
WE’RE SO BUSY BEING BUSY
We live in a society that worships at the alter of busyness and – let’s face it – in the crush of everyday expectations and unrealistic demands it’s easy to lose the sense of being engaged in anything larger than ‘cranking it out’, ‘taking care of it’ and ‘gittin er done’.
Now don’t misunderstand me, there is nothing wrong with hard work. To the contrary, working hard can help us achieve at higher levels and deepen our impact. The issue is, as is stated so eloquently in the movie Fight Club, “this is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time”.
Where is your urgency? Not your busyness – we’ve all got ‘busy’ coming out our wazoos. Where is the urgency to craft a life that you’re proud of? Where is the fire in your belly? We are all guilty of putting things off until ‘later’.
WHAT IF ‘LATER’ IS TOO LATE?
We save the fine china and the fancy clothes for ‘special occasions’. But here’s the bottom line on that – they’re not guaranteed. You never know when life will throw you a curve ball and rob you of the opportunity to have the life you want with the people you want it with.
Far too often we wait until we have no choice but to take action. But it shouldn’t require a terminal illness, financial ruin or extreme unhappiness to inspire us to make positive changes in our lives. Perhaps those old clichés are worth paying attention to: Seize the day! Take the bull by the horns! You only live once! BOOYAH!
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIVE URGENTLY?
For me, living with a strong sense of urgency means leading a self-examined life, cultivating deep, meaningful connections, spending time with the people I love, doing work that matters and that makes a difference, being mindful and present, not taking anything for granted and not wasting time on things that don’t matter.
YOUR NEXT STEPS
It’s time to rekindle your inner fire. It’s time to develop a sense of urgency about your life. The clock is ticking. There is never going to be a better time than right now. Start to get some clarity around the life you want to create. Set some goals. Crush those goals. Live in possibility. Remove yourself from what is perceived as comfortable because outside of your comfort zone is where the magic happens. It’s time to stretch into your greatness. You deserve no less.
Do it now. Do it now. Do it now.
