Honouring Our Emotions

Incredibly generous people surround many of us. We’re so very fortunate to have loving friends and family members, who give of themselves heart and soul, putting their own needs on the back burner to make sure everyone else is satisfied first. I’m truly grateful to have these wonderful givers in my life, but have you noticed that the biggest-hearted people ~ those who give endlessly of their time, the caretakers, the volunteers, the non-stop doers ~ are very often those who wind up seriously ill?
Now, the immediate reaction might be, “Of course they get sick. They never, ever stop!” This is an obvious conclusion, but with no critical intention I would like to offer a different perspective on all this giving and doing. First, I’m not a doctor. I have no health care credentials, but from observation, my understanding of energy from a Feng Shui perspective, and confirmation from several energy healers, I believe in my heart of hearts that illness begins in our energetic body first and eventually manifests in our physical body and that we unconsciously allow it to occur.
Here’s how it happens. The majority of us were programmed from birth to “grin and bare it” regardless of our feelings. As kids our tears, no matter the tragedy behind them, were “jollied” away, or we were bluntly told to “stop crying and buck up”. Our physical size, shape or complexion often met with heartless teasing, our broken hearts with lack of compassion, and the loss of beloved pets or even a parent, were swept conveniently under the rug. As a result we’ve learned to suppress our anguish and without our knowing, this endless stream of neglected emotion continues to create havoc in our physical bodies as long as we remain convinced it’s better to push them down.
Discounted, overlooked, rejected or brushed off emotions are the energies that illness is made of. I know it works this way as I’ve experienced it first hand. I literally dealt with headaches every single day from childhood until ten years ago. When the pain decided my head wasn’t enough territory and eventually travelled indiscriminately around my entire body, I decided enough was enough. By uncovering, acknowledging and releasing those bottled-up emotions I set myself and my Spirit free.
You see emotion is part of our Spiritual selves. It is the energy that gets us from thought to feeling and it flows around and through our bodies. Not many of us can see it, but we can certainly feel it. When we receive good news, joyful energy runs rapidly through us. No stops. No blocks. Just free flowing elation. When we’re in that moment, we feel no aches or pains, just a jubilant high that comes with the energy rush. However when the opposite occurs, sad, upsetting, heavy or depressing energy tugs at our bellies, sticks in our muscles and pounds in our heads like a jackhammer, breaking us down and creating the perfectly weakened environment for disease.
So many of the wonderful givers in our society fall prey to illness and disease, not because they do too much, but because the allow themselves to feel too little. Their endless doing keeps their mind and body engaged with events outside themselves, so they’ve never gotten close enough to their own hearts to acknowledge their emotions. Worse yet, that old programming has them innocently denying their own trauma and downplaying their own pain by saying how much worse someone else has it, because they’ve never learned the value of releasing their emotional baggage.
Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t advocate selfishness. It’s important to share our time and what we have freely with others, however if we’re tired and hungry, we’re certainly not at our best, so how could we possibly give our best to somebody else? The same approach applies to our emotional state.
Taking time to honour our emotional and Spiritual selves by being instead of doing, listening for Divine Wisdom in meditation, rather than doing the all the talking in prayer, frees us from emotional bondage. When we allow ourselves to release past energies that no longer serve us, we ease our physical pain and encourage healing. Freedom from pain and illness, creates space for joyful emotion allowing us to truly connect to our Spiritual Source and our giving becomes an effortless task that no longer drains our physical being. Honouring our Self first allows us to truly honour another and that is the essence of Love.

No More Lame Excuses
When we’re about to start a brand new adventure, to learn a new skill or to take on something we’ve never done before, acknowledging our limited know how is an ideal strategy because it allows us to start from an uncomplicated position and we are wide open to receive new information. Once we’ve spent time practicing a task for period of time we acquire more knowledge and eventually develop some expertise and our confidence grows, right? Well, I’ve been paying attention to a particular human behaviour, especially prominent in women and it’s become apparent that too many of us continually make nonsensical excuses for our performance and aptitude.
When attending a series of meetings I witnessed the dynamic, inspiring, intelligent, witty and outgoing woman running the event, tell the group at every meeting how very shy she really is. This may have been the case at some point in her life, but from where I was sitting, nothing seemed to be further from the truth.
Then there is my accomplished and vibrant friend who has been insisting since I helped her purchase a laptop about five years ago, that she’s completely out of her league when it comes to anything to do with computers or technology. I wish she would acknowledge how far she’s come and that this statement totally discounts the hours and hours she’s committed to improving her skills.
Until just recently my favourite personal excuse when I didn’t understand something immediately had always been “It takes me a long time to grasp a new concept”, then I backed it up with facts from a test I took a zillion years ago, which determined that I use my right brain and left brain, as well as my visual and auditory learning skills equally that in turn did a bunch of other blah blah blah and supposedly proved without a shadow of a doubt I wasn’t as stupid as I felt when sitting somewhere with vacant look on my face. Didn’t it?
Consciously or unconsciously, we often pretend we’re far less competent than we truly are by wearing our illusory deficiencies like an armour of pre-formulated justification in case something goes amiss. In an effort to protect our precious egos, we send out a disclaimer to camouflage our perceived imperfections so we can’t be blamed if we make a mistake or so we won’t look dumb for not understanding or for doing something else we think could make us look foolish if our performance isn’t up to some self-imposed expectation.
Excuses are negative low-level energies damaging to our abilities and ourselves. When these energies become locked into our consciousness we see them to as truth. This belief then alters our brain chemistry making our misconceptions about our capabilities a reality. (See Dr. Joe Dispenza’s: Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind.) When we hide behind our excuses we lie to others, but even more harmful is that we lie to ourselves and when we allow ourselves to believe that we are not capable, we deny our infinite Spirit.
Our Spirit allow us to be and do ANYTHING we can imagine and at eighty-three my mother proved it this past holiday season. Mom has trouble lifting her feet and is dependant on a walker to get around even on the flattest surface, so for a few years now, due to the sixteen-steps leading up to our front door, she’s believed she was unable to visit our home anymore. Well, this year fate intervened and determined that if Mom wanted to spend the holidays with the rest of us, she was going to have to put aside the excuses and muster everything she had to make the climb. Our entire family shared a wonderful Christmas at the top of those stairs. Mom’s triumphant climb is a tribute to our truly unlimited Spirit.

Heaven Sent
On a chilly November day in the Gatineau Hills, a dainty little ladybug sat in patient anticipation, watching intently from her perch on an exquisitely polished stone. The appointed day had arrived and now as she waited she reflected on the melancholy afternoon when she accepted this assignment.
That day had seemed perfect to her in many ways. A warm glow from the late August sun held the chill from an early approaching autumn at bay. Small chattering groups were gathering near her home on the hillside and excitement was rising in the flamboyant little beetle. She so loved to be surrounded by people, but as she gracefully flitted through leaves and around neatly arranged bouquets of fragrant blossoms it seemed rather odd to her that despite her brilliant scarlet and black ensemble, she went virtually unnoticed.
As the crowd quieted, the lovely little lady looked on. She noticed deep shadows falling despite a cloudless blue sky and as she paid closer attention she heard a lone saxophone lamenting in a rhythm meant to soothe broken hearts. One woman in particular seemed unbearably distraught. The ladybug had never felt this feeling before and wanted so much to escape until she heard a gentle voice on the breeze whispering through the nearby forest grove. “Please wait for her,” it pleaded. “She’ll return before the snow flies.”
The little ladybug had heard about ‘the Voice’ before. Her elders told elaborate stories of the glory days when Ladybugs earned their time-honoured name. It was said that in the Middle Ages insects were destroying the crops and when the farmers prayed for help, Mary the Mother of Jesus called in the red and black ones to answer their prayers. In gratitude the farmers named these helpers, “The Beetles of Our Lady”. Eventually ‘Ladybug’ was the name that stuck and now she had heard the call herself.
It was early afternoon when a car pulled tentatively into the hillside parking lot. The leaves were gone now and the spiky grey branches on barren trees made the place feel so desolate. As the driver opened the door, she pulled her coat tightly around herself. It wasn’t the chill in the air so much, as the fact that she was there to see her husband’s tombstone for the first time. When she walked this pathway before, she was surrounded by loved ones. This time she took the journey alone with only a camera in her pocket, so she could send a photo to loved ones who lived on the other side of the country. She lingered a while with her face to the wind, allowing it to dry the salty tears that trickled down both cheeks and when her eyes cleared, she turned to admire the stone. “Everything he deserves,” she thought as she snapped a photo and hurried away much quicker than when she arrived.
She couldn’t face downloading the photos immediately. It was just a bit too much to bear for one day, but her courage returned early the next morning and with a few clicks of her mouse there it was, an elegant tribute to the man she loved so dearly. Everything that happened in the past year came rushing back to her and she was flooded with emotion. She just couldn’t stop missing him and longing for something to reconnect her to everything they shared, she sat staring into her computer screen, focusing more closely on the details of the stone. There seemed to be an odd marking beside the date. As she zoomed in closer and closer, the tiny little ladybug revealed herself.
“Are ladybugs good luck?” she Googled frantically. In an online article by Angel Therapist, Dr. Doreen Virtue Ph.D. she received her answer. “You can be sure that heaven’s sending you a loving message whenever you find ladybugs in unusual locations…The angels say, ‘Ladybugs, like hearts with wings, are our love-letter carriers from Heaven above.’”
We are energetically connected to all of Nature and cultures worldwide consider animals and insects messengers, bearing news from the etheric realms. If we take the time to watch and listen, Nature Spirits are always ready to deliver exactly what we need to hear and through them the Divine will provide guidance and reveal the wisdom of life’s mysteries. (Ted Andrew’s book Animal Speak is a wonderful reference for what Nature’s wonders are telling us when they show up in our lives.)
Through the days and months since his passing everything in me knew that her husband, who had a true connection with Spirit, would reach across all barriers to communicate with her in some way. She, a more ‘practical person’ (her words) wasn’t so sure. The day she revealed his Heaven sent gift, her joy was undeniable.

So, What IS Feng Shui For Your Spirit?
I knew when I started my practise a few years back that most people had only a vague idea of what Feng Shui is all about, but it wasn’t until my teenage nephew totally cracked me up by asking his mom if she was using “Aunt Mary’s Hippie Magic again!” that I realized just how shrouded in superstition Feng Shui really is.
Well, there’s truly nothing magical about it! In very simple terms: Feng Shui is an ancient science based on the movement of energy. It has roots in China dating back about 5,000 years, as well as in other cultures worldwide that have also been studying the art of balancing and harmonizing energy flow. Additionally, modern science has proved that everything from rocks to animals, to our human bodies and Spirits is made up of energy and that all things vibrate in sync with the universal energy that surrounds them. (Check out the film or book What the Bleep do we Know?)
The purpose of contemporary Feng Shui is to find the best environmental arrangement for people to live and work up to their fullest potential, physically, mentally, emotionally and Spiritually, so positive intention ~ an energetic thought form ~ is also part of the energy or life force Feng Shui works with, because everything in our universe is energetically connected.
Too many people still think the chaos they experience is created by external energetic forces, so they come to me looking for quick Feng Shui fix hoping a well placed mirror and a new colour on the front door will make all the difference to their troubled existence. Although adjustments to our surrounding help make us feel better in the short term, I have proven to myself time and again that our thoughts are the energies that create our reality, so in order to apply effective and long lasting Feng Shui enhancements to our environment, clear, heartfelt thinking is imperative first.
When confusing, hectic or disordered thoughts haunt us, achieving this clarity is much easier when using what I refer to Feng Shui For Your Spirit©, which assists in moving energy from our heads to our hearts so we can stop thinking chaotic stuff and start acknowledging how we feel about things instead!
Feng Shui For Your Spirit© incorporates the Bagua Map traditionally used for mapping our homes, in a unique way. I use it as a Soul-searching guide to discover where we’re losing our positively charged life force. The Bagua Map is divided into eight areas (surrounding a grounding centre section), which relate to all aspects of our physical, mental, emotional and Spiritual existence:
WEALTH ~ ABUNDANCE ~ PROSPERITY
FAME ~ REPUTATION
RELATIONSHIPS ~ LOVE ~ MARRIAGE
CREATIVITY ~ CHILDREN
SPIRIT ~ HELPFUL PEOPLE ~ TRAVEL
CAREER EDUCATION ~ KNOWLEDGE ~ SELF CULTIVATION
HEALTH ~ FAMILY
ALL sides of life deserve equal attention and respect, which in turn create balance and harmony, so by creating a personal Feng Shui For Your Spirit© Bagua Map and exploring the positive and negative feelings we hold about each area, we can easily recognize our blessings as well as issues that require the attention of loving energy.
To support Feng Shui For Your Spirit© growth I’ve also developed a card system to be used in conjunction with the Bagua Map or on it’s own. Addressing our inner work allows us a more complete understanding of what we feel in every situation. Meditating on these or other heartfelt concepts found in the Feng Shui For Your Spirit© Card Deck for a few minutes everyday will allow divinely guided energies to create flow in your life.
Accept that this moment is all you ever have.
A peaceful, loving world starts with you.
Generosity is good for your soul.
Trust your inner wisdom.
Stay present.
Loving energy heals all.
Disengage from heartache.
Live free from negative thought.
Gratitude is the only prayer you really need.
Your own ego is the only thing that leads you astray.
Combining these two simple Feng Shui For Your Spirit© techniques makes it much easier to recognize and implement the enhancements we need in our internal and external environments, which help maintain inner peace and create a stress free life!

Breaking N.E.W.S.
The formal exchange of information has been part of human culture since messengers ran from city to city in ancient times and the town criers of early North American settlements clanged their bells on street corners. The word NEWS is an acronym for North East West South and the purpose of NEWS agencies is to report factual information from all four corners of the globe, which specifically answer the W-Five questions ~ WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? My personal experience however, has provided a distinctly different perspective.
I started my television career over thirty years ago spending a great deal of time in newsrooms, waiting on tender hooks for the final word on a lead story so I could scurry to an editing room and string together shiny bits of hype that would draw audiences to nightly broadcasts.
In the summer of 1990, when the Gulf War broke out I was recognized as an expert NEWS promoter and was immediately drafted by the Never Ending War Stories department for an extended tour of duty. When I finally escaped nine months later, somewhat shell shocked, battle worn and totally disillusioned from watching facts being spun into dramatic stories which damage the Human Spirit, I promised myself that Negligently Eroding World Sanity was not how I wanted to make my living and ever since I’ve been an expert NEWS avoider.
When NEWS is turned on in my environment I immediately tune out because in my opinion there are No Ethical Words Spoken. Here’s how it really works: As regular people and events are far from NEWSWORTHY, reporters manipulate information with Narrow-minded or Exaggerated Words, Separating the haves from the have nots, the popular from the ordinary, as well as countries, cultures, and communities in order to exalt the outrageous. I believe NEWS reporting has degenerated into a divisive medium, which distorts human expectations and emotions through sensationalized spectacles. In other words they produce Nothing Ever Worth Sharing.
Emotions are conductors of energy and energy gathers momentum relative to the frequency of the emotion feeding it. When we see something disturbing we are either compelled to take action ~ which enhances positive energy ~ or in most cases we just get upset or depressed over our inability to do anything about it ~ which rapidly adds to a pre-existing vortex of doom. Allowing ourselves to absorb a constant barrage of Negative Energy Waves, Suppresses our Spiritual connection by creating a fearful and anxious environment, which is the polar opposite of our Divine nature.
Love is what we are. One of our greatest gifts is thoughtful compassion, which originates from our Source. I find it so unfortunate that most of society has been programmed to seek outside of Self, continually waiting for some external authority to provide or affirm our opinions. If people would at very least turn off the sound on their TVs they could formulate their views with their hearts, based on what they see going on around them, rather than allowing some all knowing broadcast authority to tell them how they should feel and how to respond to current events. Better yet if you can’t make a positive energetic contribution, it’s best not to take in the NEWS at all.
I do realize that Not Everyone Wants Sensationalism, but it is apparent from the ratings of NEWS broadcasts that we are truly in the minority. It’s time for more of us to speak out against this Needlessly Exploitive World Sabotage. Any takers?

Superwoman & The A-Ha Moment
“It’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.”
This anonymous line from an e-mail packed with insightful gems sums up exactly what I’ve been feeling lately.
Years ago while attending a Pow Wow, I was privileged to sit in an Aboriginal healing circle. As individuals shared their grief for the benefit of healing, although I revealed nothing from my own life, I wept non-stop for over two-hours. When I asked the Shaman leading this circle the reason for my reaction she explained, “You are a channel. It’s a gift from the Great Spirit. You cry the tears others cannot.”
For over twenty years now I’ve gratefully used this gift with pride, spontaneously assisting individuals with the expression of their heartache, so when I opted to write this column, I believed myself to be Spiritually mature, well poised to provide streams of wisdom to the masses and confident in my ability to ride any Spiritual wave with balanced energy fit for stormy seas.
Now, you may remember from my last few articles that there have been some very unsettling events swelling up around me. Each incident has left me a bit more off balance, but because of the nature of my gift and even though this most disturbing sinking feeling was never part of the experience before, I allowed myself to believe what was pulling me under was the unintentional channelling other people’s grief. I could see no other possible explanation so I intended to weather the storm.
I knew I was in trouble because as I started working on this week’s piece, I did so with rolling trepidation. Staring into an immense white void, I wondered if my inspiration had dried up completely, until I received this loving comment online:
“I believe this (article) is a gentle reminder from Spirit to me…I am definitely a work in progress my friend…a spiritual being having a human experience…you are the instrument that Spirit is using, to help get these messages out to the universe.” ~ Deborah
In one humbling A-Ha Moment I realized I’d unconsciously been indulging my ego’s need for SuperWoman Spiritual Elite status! I had myself completely convinced that this dis-ease I felt belonged to someone else. It couldn’t possibly be mine ~ I had a much better understanding than this! It had also seemed sensible to assume my gift of flow-through-channelling instantly transformed into a sponge, soaking up all the grief of friends and family. This was certainly more acceptable than facing my own pain directly in the eye ~ wasn’t it?! But now it was so obvious. With my ego clearly in charge, I’d been smearing my own emotional state on their circumstances as a way of avoiding personal heartbreak and that sinking feeling was clearly my own sorrow screaming for liberation.
As is the nature of our Divine universe, I was provided with several enlightened insights because of Deborah’s note. Through her I received the clarity to recognize how easily we can be fooled by our humanness. I’ve been reminded that Spiritual growth has everything to do with our experiences, and what we allow ourselves to feel from them; that Spiritual maturity is shaped by wisdom, not pride and that messages channelled from Spirit will never pull you under. Most importantly is that this gift of channelling is not exclusive. Through Deborah I received exactly what I needed, because we are ALL one with the Divine and we are all share equally in these gifts.
Yes, it IS definitely taking me a long time to be the person I want to be and this is why I am so very grateful for the comments I receive from you, our VividLife readers. They help take me one step further and remind me of how truly blessed we all are.

Along Came A Spider
Death has been on my mind lately. It’s not that I’m concerned about my own inevitable passing, but because I recently received a heart wrenching e-mail, from a wonderful woman who, while caring for her husband as best she can, is watching helplessly as his body, shrunken from the ravages of chemotherapy is slipping away from her.
“I am a mess of emotions,” she explained. “To know ahead of time that you are leaving and will not be with the people and everything you love so much is so cruel. To know ahead of time that someone you love so much is leaving you is so cruel. People say to me to make the best of the time we have left together but it is so difficult not to just cry all the time.”
Feeling the sting of her unbearable sadness and knowing I was at a loss to console her with anything I might say, my day continued with mundane chores and seemingly endless reflection on the frailties of life, until down from the ceiling, dangling on a long silken thread, a delicate little spider lowered herself gracefully into my line of sight.
Now, spider is one of my totems and she drops in on me occasionally, so unlike many people who would run for a broom (or for the hills), she’s welcome in my environment. According to Native American Spirituality, Grandmother Spider is said to have woven the original web of the physical world, which was used as the foundation for all life forms and her two-lobed body represents an infinity symbol. As there are no mistakes in God’s unlimited Universe, I knew Grandmother Spider was there to impart her wisdom once more and I was immediately reminded of what I know from the depth of my Being to be true.
I see our physical body as a fancy new outfit, woven from the fabric of our external world that we choose to wear during the current incarnation of our Spirit. I also believe that the process of dropping our bodies must be like the freedom we felt as young children being allowed to run naked on a beach. Liberated beings ~ unclothed ~ unencumbered ~ infinite innocence, capable of endless love and creativity. So for me there is something wonderful about death.
I received this message today. “He passed away very peacefully yesterday, without pain or medication. He died in my arms with the kids at his side and took care of us right to his very last breath, as he didn’t make us suffer watching him die a slow and painful death. For this, I will always be grateful.”
As the Spirit of a loved one is released from this plane, earth’s energies shift, and a ripple is felt deep in the Souls of those left behind. At this time the rise and fall of emotion will beg for attention and we’re offered a unique circumstance to examine our own lives from a whole new perspective. If we open our eyes to the possibilities, and listen very closely, we’ll hear the answers to our heart’s desire for healing from that Spirit, who never really left us at all.

Altitude is Everything
I woke up very early this morning to gulls in flight silhouetted on a magnificent orange sunrise, and as God rays glistened on the horizon I contemplated how people choose to allow their lives to play out.
You see, in the past three weeks I’ve travelled almost 1500 kilometres visiting family members who are contemplating death through the ailments they’ve chosen and those who have been left behind after a loved decided to succumb to illness and transition to the other side. There have also been endless phone conversations and e-mails with individuals in crisis over chosen behaviours that are causing irreparable damage to relationships and even more news of acquaintances deciding to deal with similar traumas.
Many will argue adamantly. “We were given free will, so why on earth would I choose this!? Sometime s**t just happens!”. But it doesn’t. Our Divine Creator has been extremely fair with this gift of free will, so whether we accept it or not, everything that happens to us is our personal choice and we don’t just decide on the good stuff.
We make our own choices about our health ~ do we want to be well or ill? Our wealth ~ rich or poor, prosperous or lacking? Our relationships ~ peaceful or argumentative, loving or violent? Our environments ~ clean or dirty, lush or sparse? Our partners ~ male or female, concerned or indifferent? Our life ~ our choice. It’s our God given right to choose it all and I believe we do it though our ALTITUDE.
Illness, lack, scarcity, violence, indifference ~ unfortunately the list goes on and on ~ all vibrate at a very low energetic frequency and we feed these harmful energies by dramatizing our misfortunes. Continuous repetition prolongs the anguish of distressing events because we relive the trauma over and over and over again. Without realizing it at a conscious level we vibrate in sync with all that low-level energy, causing dis-ease in every part of our lives.

Our energetic vibration rises when we choose not indulge in negative drama. A loving, peaceful, positive focus frees us from low-level energy. These higher vibrations promote healing in all areas of life, making it possible to be joyful despite our physical circumstances. Dr. Joe Dispenza D.C. (featured teacher from What the Bleep Do We Know?) provides definitive proof in his book Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind, that recurring positive thought will change our brain structure and restore health.
Allowing our Spirit to become the watcher of our thoughts, encourages us to release the negative energies of destructive thought patterns, always uplifting and leading us to the higher ground of our creative, loving Source. So for me ALTITUDE is everything.

A Manner of Speaking
“What can I do for you?” is my very favourite question. I love to ask it and I love it when I’m asked. It’s a gracious question, a courteous question. It makes the asked feel respected and the asker feel empowered. It’s also a generous question, allowing both parties the opportunity to give of themselves to the other. As a heartfelt inquiry it’s evidence that we are aware of, and care how other people feel and it’s an obvious demonstration of good manners.
Unfortunately considerate social behaviour is on a steady decline because technology helps us neglect the people around us. In our so-called advanced techno-culture, graciousness, courtesy, generosity, respect and many other signs of a well-mannered society appear to be completely ignored.
Personal interaction is diminishing. Apartment dwellers don’t acknowledge each other on elevators and suburbanites haven’t a clue who their neighbours are anymore. We don’t know the bank teller, because we always use the ATM. In many large retail stores, cashiers have been replaced by Self-Check-Out counters. When we call for service we rarely get an actual human being on the line. After lengthy PRIORITY SEQUENCE cues listening to spa music and despite an automated operator endlessly repeating how VERY IMPORTANT we are, when a real person actually picks up the line, we don’t know who the heck they are and really don’t care, which provides a ridiculous excuse to treat them in the rudest way possible.
Many of us who work for ourselves choose isolation over conversation, going days without actually speaking to someone else. Voice-mail, e-mail, text and instant messaging allow us to connect with people around the world instantly, but sadly they also allow us to disconnect from each other emotionally. We’ve all participated in or witnessed e-mail conversations that have left one or both parties feeling bruised, because rapidly written responses don’t convey the subtle nuances expressed though real conversation.
The way we treat each other everyday is a very personal indication of what’s important to us. Good manners encourage positive emotions in the receiver and the giver of the courtesy. Polite behaviours carry an uplifting energetic vibration so treating each other with dignity and respect enhances our overall well-being! Above all a gracious face-to-face or verbal exchange acknowledges our interconnectedness ~ our Oneness with our Divinity and with each other.
Now here’s a challenge, this week turn the tables and introduce yourself to your waiter. After a waiting too long at a service desk, ask the server how their day is going, give some time to the parking lot attendant who’s just trying to make a living and ask a sales clerk ~ What can I do for YOU? Then let me know how you feel!

Terminal Terminology
A young girl perhaps ten years old was a featured guest on a high profile daily network TV talk show I was working on a few years back. She told a story of driving with her mom in the downtown area of a major Canadian city one bitterly cold winter day and watching in dismay as an underdressed elderly man, dug through a garbage bin and ate the dregs he found there. With this heartbreaking image stuck in her mind, she asked endless questions, “Why is he out there?” “Where does he sleep?” “Where will he spend Christmas?” At a loss for all the answers, her mother suggested she do something about it and that she did. This lovely little one created a thriving charity and the passion of her personal quest to help the homeless earned her a spot on national TV to promote her cause.
Now, one of my functions on this program was Producer of enticing advertising hype to promote the network’s cause, so I wrote a warm and fuzzy heartfelt blurb, submitted it to the series Executives and awaited approval. Moments later, the script was returned revised as follows: Coming Up Next: A Young Canadian heroine BATTLES HOMELESSNESS. I was stunned. Were they really asking me to further this child’s loving cause with a combat analogy!?
Thus began my personal quest against the use of war terms.
When you start paying attention you’ll notice everyday conversations are chock full of military terms. In society’s survival of the fittest, fear-based, power-hungry mentality, businesses think nothing of setting TARGET dates or project DEADLINES ~ originally meaning the area military prisoners could not move beyond without risk of being shot by guards. And when an investment pays a hefty sum, people are making a KILLING.
In sports football players go for long BOMBS, hockey has an ATTACK zone and a player in control of a soccer ball is known at the ATTACKER. Sportscasters and coaches twist games into combat, pitting teams against each other in a FIGHT to the DEATH. Even a leisurely afternoon game of golf has its roots well buried in battle terms. CADDIE for example is short for cadet, meaning someone training for military duty and FORE was a term used as a warning for incoming fire on the front lines long before it became popular on the links.
We have groups out there FIGHTING for freedom and justice or individuals BATTLING cancer. We even have many of our best and most well respected spiritual teachers referring to those of us in search of our personal truth as Spiritual WARRIORS.
I truly believe the energy created by is terminal terminology, subconsciously reinforces negativity and brutality in our society. Now that you know where these words originated do you want to continue using them in your daily life? With our extensive capacity for creativity, we as spiritually enlightened beings can to do better than this. The English language contains somewhere in the neighbourhood of 750,000 words. Let’s meet this challenge together by committing to a non-violent society that encourages the use of peaceful language. I’d love to hear your suggestions. Together our words can change the world!
And by the way…my original script made it to air.
