As if there is not enough pressure to conform to what others expect of us, to line up to the models set out in society and fall in line with the roles we play, in the spiritual community we are often called to negate the personality as well. It can all be so confusing and tiring.
“Just who the hell am I suppose to be,” one student asked me.
“Yourself,” I said.
“Who the hell is that and what if she’s not good enough?”
“F*ck em,” I said.
I mean that with love but I am so tired of thinking we all need to fix ourselves and the idea that the personality is bad and the ego is bad and the thinking mind is bad and even that swearing is bad. LOL.
I use to feel that I needed to take on the persona of what I thought a spiritual person was. For me this meant I should be very serious, never swear, never show the parts of me that were not “holy” (by this I don’t mean low-cut tops and tight jeans though that too) and certainly never talk about my somewhat crazy past including my leaving home at 15, my employment with the Chinese mafia, my affair with a famous Canadian musician and many other illustrious events that I would be happy to share over tequila shots if you are buying. There were parts of myself and my life that seemed to not fit into what the world of Yoga and spirituality said was yogic but I now realize that integration and truly loving our self means we embrace it all. Demonstrating Yoga – true union starts with union with myself.
Yes there are aspects of my personality that are less than favorable but I love those parts too. Yes there are parts of my past that are not appropriate to discuss in the middle of Yoga class but I love those too. Yes there are aspects of my life that are sad or hard but I love those too. I do my Yoga and spiritual practice so I can allow my true essence to guide every action, every word and every thought – MY true essence.
We were given amazing personality traits so let us embrace them. They are here to help us ease-fully and joyfully navigate planet Earth not to escape it or ourselves. Of course we do not want to have a narcissistic relationship with ourselves and I want to constantly evolve into my true greatness but I now stand in honor and esteem of my freak flag. It is part of who I am and what makes me great. You have a freak flag too – fly it high.
Your freak flag is often those parts of you that are truly YOU. Your gifts, traits, experiences and thoughts that mold you and your world. We are all one but we are all also wonderful ambassadors of personal beauty and power that can only be expressed in you by you.
I have to be me otherwise my clothes won’t fit. – Shasta
Finding Your Freak Flag
* What gifts have YOU been blessed with??? Maybe it’s a wicked sense of humor, maybe an alluring smile, maybe a gift for story telling, maybe you have a photographic memory. My husband can tell you EVERY single Super Bowl winner, Masters Champion, Stanley Cup winner from the last 75 years. It use to be embarrassing when he would launch into this at parties now I love that he is such a freak. He astounds people, makes them smile and loves to share.
* How Can You Remember the Power of These Gifts? I use to feel ashamed of my very white trash roots but now I realize this aspect of myself is what made me so focused on success, so wanting to help others rise above their circumstances and was the fuel to learn and grow always. What are you hiding or ashamed of that has true power for you?
* What freak flag color can you share now? What are your ready to bring to the world that is truly YOU? For example this column is an example of me sharing my freak flag – it is all my truth, my personality, my view of the world, my sense of humor and my bad punctuation. I am not trying to be another writer or another teacher – this is all just me. You don’t have to write an article or sculpt modern art to express yourself – relax back into who you are and share that truth with the world.
Yes it takes courage and confidence to stand in our personal power but we all need each of us to be our own amazing freak show.
