READ: Infertility ~ Age is an Age Old Problem by Mache Seibel, MD

It’s been 30 years since I performed the first successful in-vitro fertilization procedure in Massachusetts, the third in the country. We’ve had many breakthroughs since that time to help infertile couples have a baby who might otherwise not have been able to. But one thing hasn’t changed; the impact of age. The chances of a woman naturally having a baby after age 35 decline by about 50% and decline by about 90% after age 40. Infertility is defined as one year of attempting conception without success.

Celebrities are often seen in the news seemingly able to have a baby after age 40 with ease. They often don’t disclose that they obtained eggs from a younger woman, a procedure called egg donation. So if having a baby is in your future plans, get started before age becomes a factor. If age is a factor, don’t wait to be seen. If you’re over 35, see an infertility expert if you don’t conceive naturally within 6 months. If you’re over 40, be seen after 3 months of unsuccessfully trying. Making a baby takes time.

For those of you who’ve struggled with infertility, I know how stressful it can be. Because of that, I wrote this poem about the invisible loss that occurs and want to share it with you now in honor of Infertility Awareness Week.
Infertility: The Child Who Might Have Been

The simple union of man and wife
In love creates a brand new life
A child to cherish, play with and be
Their link with immortality

What bliss and joy they anticipate
Unless infertility becomes their fate
And buries dreams which die within
As they mourn their child who might have been

Is Your Health Powered by Love? by Mache Seibel, MD

Huey Lewis sang about “The Power of Love.” Now a relatively new field called interpersonal neurobiology is proving your brain is constantly in a state of being rewired based on life and love. And the basis of it all is our interpersonal relationships; those contacts we love deeply, and those we love, well, a whole lot less.

Yoga ~ A Menopause Alternative to HRT by Mache Seibel MD

Twenty years ago during a particularly stressful period of work, I began taking a yoga class as a non-pharmacologic antidote. I was running a center for reproduction and women’s health, working 24/7 and needed a way to relax. I had the good fortune to enroll with a yogini named Hari Khar Khalsa, and I took classes from her for a period of time. One day after class I asked her if she would be interested in teaching a yoga class to my patients to lower their stress. We began a series of yoga classes with the first hour consisting of us sitting on mats on the floor with my patients and discussing a health topic. I called them “Mat Chats.” The second hour was devoted to yoga with a focus on the medical topic we had just covered.

READ: Where To Dine Healthily in Johnson City, Texas by Carolyn Scott Hamilton

Johnson City, Texas. Just an hour or so northwest of San Antonio, located in the beautiful rolling hill country, this is the small town that president Lyndon Baines Johnson grew up in. Being a history geek, along with my hubby, we took a day trip up to see LBJ’s boyhood home as well as to see the sprawling acreage at his Texas White House about 20 minutes west of there.

A peaceful area, Johnson City boasts a population of 1,200 people. Yes, you read that correctly. So what was I able to find in this little Texas town you ask? Plenty!

If you’re either making the pilgrimage out to check out some American history or just passing through Hill Country, rest assured that there are some veggie options available in good ol’ JC!

The first is at the Silver K Cafe. Super cute and part of what was an old lumber yard, this cafe is an all American gem. Easily veganizable salads and sandwiches, it’s the perfect place to stop for lunch or grab and go to eat on the road. I loved my fresh focaccia grilled vegetable sandwich and was delighted at the variety of seasonal veggies that they packed it full with. It’s small town America with a progressive and delicious menu!

If it’s an ice cold local beer you’re looking for, check out Pecan Street Brewing Company located in the town square. Grab your draft and order up a cheeseless pizza, salad or be naughty with some sweet potato fries. A hip brewery that overlooks the historic town square makes for a neat evening treat!

Pizza is always welcome after a day of sightseeing, especially when traveling with a group of buddies or family. AJ’s Pizza Shoppe is just the place what with their awesome outdoor stage and giant menu of toppings to make the veggiest pizza ever. AND they offer gluten free crust! Order up a big cheeseless pie, load on the veggie toppings and enjoy your slice under the stars while listening to some local jams. Ah, that’s Texas!

Johnson City is a great little town somewhat frozen in time. But as I just proved, no matter where you might be, metropolitan or not, The Healthy Voyager can always find vegan, gluten free and healthy eats!

How to Order Vegan, Gluten Free Or Healthier Options at National Restaurant Chains by Carolyn Scott Hamilton

Expanding on last week’s post on healthier fast food finds, I’ve compiled a list of popular restaurant chains that can be found nationwide. You never know when you are heading out for a meal with a group and need to do the best you can with the menu you are given. No matter where you may be in the U.S. (and Canada), you should have no problem finding a decent meal at any of the places on the list below. So fear not my little health conscious foodies, you may eat, drink and be merry in mainstream dining establishments!!! In no particular order:

How to Order Vegan, Gluten Free Or Healthier Options at National Fast Food Chains

So, there are times where despite our best efforts, our only options just might be fast food, especially on vacation or a trip. On a road trip or in a podunk town with little to zero options for a healthy meal, I’ve found ways to navigate the fast food menu. I do not, I repeat, do not, advocate the consumption of fast food except for in a pinch and other compromising situations. So I suggest you print this blog in case of emergency!

READ: The Wisdom of the Heart: Learning to Listen to What Our Heart is Telling Us By Patrick J. Ryan

As coaches, counselors, therapists, teachers, HR professionals, organizational leaders, or team members, it is essential we learn how to access and use our Heart Wisdom. The more skillful we become, the better our lives, as well as those around us, become.

We experience the world primarily through the three intelligences of our mind, our body and our heart and they operate in union. It is always worth stating that these three intelligences are linked together, so whenever we attempt to discuss one of them, we must keep in mind that the other two are connected and at work as well.

In short, the Heart Wisdom is the realm of our emotional experience and our interrelatedness to the world and all that is in our life from the past, present and future. All of our emotional experiences are in present time, regardless of what is creating the emotion:
• When we remember a past experience and have an emotional response to it, we are having a present-moment emotional experience of the past.
• When we imagine a future experience and have an emotional response to it, we are having a present-time emotional experience of an imagined future.
• When we are in a real-time situation, we are having a present-time emotional experience of that situation.

Our Heart Wisdom is a gift we can learn to use in a good way, but the vast majority of us never really take the time to learn how to use this gift. Instead we often ignore or push away an emotion rather than embrace it and allow that energy to inform us. With emotional energy, it is important to learn to experience the emotion fully, so as to reveal the root source of the emotion and release that energy. We must allow it to move through us, rather than avoid it or create an addiction to it by attaching ourselves to a particular emotional experience, and then recreating it over and over to feed that addiction.

While the Mind Intelligence leads us forward with great ideas and vision, it is the Heart Wisdom that leads us with resonance, yearning and energies of “being drawn towards” someone or something. The “voice” of Heart Wisdom is not based upon a language nor a rationale that the mind can understand. Therefore, there is often a conflict between what the heart wants and what the mind understands. The Heart Wisdom is fueled by the desire to be in relationship—in resonance—with what is important for the human. It is like radar for purpose and meaning. The heart is naturally open and generous, joyous and loving, and we need to learn how to return to this resonant state.

The Point of Authentic Inquiry by Gangaji

There is a point that appears in a lifetime, regardless of chronological age, when healthy, true doubt appears. We doubt what we have been taught, and we doubt what others insist we must believe. This is the point at which true spiritual inquiry can begin.

The thought is that all our relationships change our brains. The hard wiring may not really be that hard wired after all. From our first reactions following birth with our mothers, brain scans reveal an unspoken bond between mother and child that imprints his or her brain so powerfully that many of our future relationships evolve from it.
