SO NOW WE BEGIN AGAIN, YES? Christmas has passed. Chanukah is over. The Solstice celebration is behind us. All the other end-of-year traditions of all the other cultures and religions and societies have been observed. And now we begin again. Another year. Another cycle. Another journey through another twelve month swing around the sun.
What for, though…to what end? Let that be our question of the day.
What is the point of it all? Why bother? Are we staying alive just to be alive? Do humans simply want to live, for no reason other than to exist? Or is there a larger purpose, a grander reason? It is to exist in a certain way? It is to know oneself as something in particular?
Do we seek to know ourselves as “good”? As “kind”? As gentle and caring and compassionate? As forgiving and generous and loving? But why? Why do we want to know ourselves as that? Do we want to experience ourselves as Divine? But why? Why do we want to experience ourselves as that? What is the point and the purpose of the experience?
Is the point of the experience the experience itself? If that is true, is life pointless after that? Does the experience have no purpose larger than the experience itself? If so, then what happens after the experience is over?
I sometimes liken this to sex. (CwG told me that the human sexual encounter is very much a microcosm for Life Itself, in Total.) Is the point of the sexual experience the experience itself? Does the experience have no purpose larger than the experience itself? If so, then what happens after the experience is over?
Is the sexual encounter between human beings different from the sexual encounter between other mammals? Is it simply for purposes of procreation? Or is there a larger purpose, an even grander reason than the creation of more life forms to have sex?
Is the purpose of Life Itself simply to produce more Life, so that the species may continue its existence? Or is there a larger purpose, an even grander reason than the creation of more life?
So this week we begin our march to the beginning. The New Beginning. The New Year. But what is the purpose of it all? What is the point? Why bother? What are we up to, anyway?
I want your answer. Write it below. If I don’t get your answer (no matter what it is), you get a failing grade for the semester…
