It’s January, the beginning of a new year and if ever a time for reflection it’s generally now. Was the past year fulfilling, what if anything could I have done differently, how will I make this year different, perhaps better, even in the smallest way? Will this be year to discover how to live with desire?
This can seem an overwhelming thought for many of us. Especially if you stop to think of it only in the very absolute of “what is my heart’s desire”? What is my life’s purpose as surely this has everything to do with desire but what if you still don’t know your life’s purpose? I know for myself this is a journey onto itself and one that I am still piecing together. So how do I know if I’m living with desire? The answer is simple – we live each day with desire.
I was reminded of this as I thought back to a lecture I had attended some time ago where the gentlemen spoke about desire in our daily lives. Basically without desire we’d never have the need to leave our thoughts. If you think about it, you could absolutely spend your entire day in your thoughts, thinking one thought after another and never move or get up out of your chair. Thoughts are just thoughts, they do not create action; it is our desire that creates action.
We invoke desire in everything that we do on a daily basis. It may seem insignificant but while you’re thinking about what you want for breakfast, lunch or dinner you are in your thoughts – should you have eggs for breakfast, cereal for breakfast, just coffee or maybe a smoothie for breakfast. If you think about it, you could be stuck in your thoughts over the options for hours but it is your desire for “a smoothie” that ultimately creates the action and decision to make a smoothie for breakfast. Action is always created as a result of our desire. So for every action you take throughout your day, you are doing so through your desire. Just as we don’t stop to think about breathing, desire is something we just do without even realizing.
So for those of us on the journey to finding our bigger purpose, our heart’s desire in this life, perhaps we can take comfort in knowing that we are already living with desire. I sometimes find that it is in the small steps that we take that we are able to unveil the path to the bigger aspects of our life. Each step, each action, each experience and learning can provide the clarity and ability to move forward into discovery. For me, knowing that each day however it looks is created out of my desire gives me comfort in knowing that I am already living with purpose and I am ultimately moving towards my heart’s desire.
Whether you ponder or not, enjoy the magic of your desire!
