“So don’t make judgements about anyone ahead of time before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.” 1 Corinthians 4:5 (NLT)
Recently, I was having a conversation with a family member. We were discussing a family that I was friends with their son during my childhood. Their son would routinely be violent towards me including hitting me with a hockey stick on the top of my head and sending me to the hospital.
My parents were in my old hometown and started to talk with one of our old neighbours. They found out that the father had embezzled millions of dollars of investors money. Similar to the Bernie Madoff scandal but on a much smaller scale and was now in jail. They were happy that he was imprisoned. Karma bit him on the butt.
For twenty-five years, my parents have been carrying around resentment towards this family. I doubt that family has thought twice about my parents. They felt vindicated that the family had disintegrated. Almost as if it was divine justice finally hitting the other family.
Imagine the stress on their bodies from carrying around that resentment for twenty-five years. How much healthier would they be today if they just let go of the situation back then?
If you find yourself judging anyone these days, including yourself, realize that it’s a total waste of time. Especially, when you could be enjoying the very thing you were born to do.
Don’t seek justice. Leave it to a higher power. Be a sui generis person.
Action Exercise:
What are you carrying around? Make a list. Take the list and burn it. As you watch it burn, symbolically burn the thoughts from your mind. Take some deep breaths while watching it burn and concentrate on positive thoughts. Guru Muktananda said “Use everything to your advantage.” Take advantage of people who have wronged you to live a better life.
“Whatever you do, you are creating your own future.”
