Connecting with Humility

If asked to give a definition of humility, what would you say?  Well, most of us would reply it is being humble.  Of course, that brings up the next question, what is the state of being humble?  Many people were raised to believe in order to be humble one was required to be meek, submissive and be willing to be of a lower rank or station perhaps to go so far as to be unworthy of certain conditions or even love.  However, there is more to the definition of being humble than this.  The need to be modest, selfless and unpretending is also qualities of showing humility but do not require us to give in to another or have little or no self worth.

Humility is the part of us that recognizes that we do not travel through this world alone.  We are part of a much larger circle of people and events tied together by communities, relationships with one another and our need to be connected to All That Is/God.  It is through our intuition that we are reminded of this unity.  We all have intuition but few of us actually use it.

By allowing ourselves to be humble and accept life as it is, our intuition provides us with clarity, enabling us to actually see the bigger picture.  Once we surrender to this acceptance it is actually then we are empowered to make changes in the world.  Humility is the knowing that not all things in life can nor will they be revealed in their entirety.  It translates “ I don’t know” to mean “I’m open to receiving, learning and sharing.”  Basically allowing ourselves to accept the fact that we don’t know the answers to all life’s questions and that is okay!

One big mistake we must be careful not to make is to think we must be humiliated in order to know humility.  We don’t need to be hit over the head (at least not too many times) to follow the old rule of stop, look and listen.  We were told this as children to teach us how to cross the streets and roadways safely.  Now we need to do this on our life path to assist us in learning humility.

Humility is:

  • all about gratitude and remembering everything in our lives is given to us by a Divine Source.
  • about using our gifts and abilities to their fullest, giving thanks for them, using them to help others, and maintaining a sense of humour regardless of our life lesson.
  • remembering that every life, ours included, is a teaching tool for someone else.
  • living by example and be open and willing to learn from others.
  • accepting of ourselves, warts and all.  Know that there will be times we will need to retrace our steps and not be afraid of showing that side of ourselves to the world.
  • admitting that we are all in this game of life together. We are neither above nor beneath our brothers and sisters of this earth.
  • knowing that as unique each one of is we are also all make up of the same stuff, no one better or worse.
  • giving into the fact that the diversities are for a purpose. ..we are all here to learn and grow from our life experiences
  • surrendering to the illusion and opening up to find the truth.
  • asking for help and acting with compassion and without judgment.
  • above all, we need to remember that we are all here by the Grace of God.

Once we open and allow our intuition to guide us, humility will become a goal  to understanding true love and compassions rather than a struggle.  It’s about asking for help then remembering where the help comes from and giving thanks.
