Mornings are my favourite time of the day. I am without a doubt a morning person. I love the stillness of the morning and the quiet calm sound that travels throughout the home. I feel the time I have in the morning is the most sacred and it is so important for me to have these moments daily. It is also a time for me to reflect in gratitude for the day that passed and organize my thoughts for the present day. I love mornings so much that I wake up just to watch the sun come up and way before anyone else has opened their eyes, I have enjoyed some time in pure stillness. I am lucky to witness sunrises and sunsets on a daily basis that fill my heart with so much love. This past summer, I was left in an awe of the magical sunsets I was able to experience.
Breakfast is also my favourite meals of the day. If I had to choose one meal to eat three times a day, it would be breakfast. On today’s menu, I have the pleasure of introducing Carob. I often bake with it, but today decided to enjoy it in its pure raw form in a much thicker smoothie. One that requires a bowl and not a glass with a straw. Carob joined my pantry a couple of years ago and in this short period of time, I learned so much about this new friend.
Carob is a legume, part of the pea family that grows in dry climates, mostly in the Mediterranean region. It is rich in powerful antioxidants, nutrients, high in calcium (3x more than chocolate), potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, selenium and a great source of vitamin A, B2, B3, E, D and fiber. Carob’s tannins contain gallic acid that provide anti-allergic, anti-bacterial and anti-septic health benefits. It contains pectin (a soluble fiber) that helps lower cholesterol levels.
Imagine the taste of a sweet caramel earthy flavor that is also caffeine-free. One thing you should know is that if you are looking for that chocolate-y substitute taste this does not possess the true chocolate flavor you are hoping to find. But you won’t be disappointed, carob is much sweeter than chocolate and does not contain any stimulants (great for those prone to migraines). It can be used as a healing remedy to help sooth an upset stomach. Tip: mix 1 tsp. carob powder in apple butter for relief.
A bit goes a long way when adding to recipes. In this smoothie, the sweetness from the carob powder compliments well with the ripened banana. You can substitute for any other toppings if you truly want to keep this caffeine-free.
- 1 tbsp. toasted carob powder
- 1 tbsp. sprouted almond butter
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 riped banana
- pinch of raw vanilla bean powder
- ½ tbsp. sesame tahini butter
- ¼ tsp. ghee
- ½ cup blackberries
- 1 tbsp. raw cacao nibs
- Blend all ingredients in a blender.
- Pour the mixture into a bowl.
- Top off with cacao nibs and blackberries.
