The exact New Moon occurs on Friday, Feb 13, at 9:53 PM, EST (Feb 14, at 8:23 AM in Gujarat) in the I Ching hexagram “After Completion (Appropriateness)”. Included below are the relevant interpretation segments of the hexagram from my ebook The I Ching: The Sequence of Change, An Astrological Perspective. Relevant portions of the text are listed below.
First is the hexagram that the New Moon is happening in.
AFTER COMPLETION (APPROPRIATENESS):
ABOVE AND BELOW:
Water above, fire below.
Storm clouds above, lightning below.
The danger can be seen.
There is a right way and a wrong way.
One can find the correct way to solve problems.
Discrimination without and clarity within.
THE IMAGE:
The danger is passing.
It continues to snow.
The way is becoming clear.
Movement is appropriate.
THE JUDGEMENT:
One’s behaviour does not deviate.
Not a movement out of order.
Not a pause without composure.
What appears simple is difficult to achieve.
What appears difficult will be easily dealt with.
One meets criticism with praise, and praise with criticism.
FAMILY RELATIONSHIP:
The second daughter to the second son.
Optimistic clarity meets doubtful brooding.
She understands his difficulties
And knows the right way to approach him.
She is closer to the father.
He is closer to the mother.
Her light reaches into his darkness.
It will have a good effect.
His criticism will be softened or diminished.
There will be insightful dialogue.
ZODIAC CONSIDERATIONS
A time of balance.
There is a storm without and warmth within.
The storm will not last.
One prepares for when the sky will clear.
One is considerate
And works to improve the circumstances of others.
THE LINES
Nine in the fifth place: (25° – 26° Aquarius)
Decisive initiative.
One acts to reward the worthy
And to educate the unworthy.
The fifth place: 25° – 26° Aquarius: 40. Deliverance
Movement out of the abyss.
Loud noises will scare away thieves.
One works to improve difficulties.
Nine in the fifth place:
In a position of authority
One must face many obstacles
And do what is unpleasant.
One is firm and keeps the welfare of others in heart.
No blame.
This hexagram has tremendous significance at this time. Above is dangerous water, below is the fire of clarity. This implies difficult work without and light and clarity within. In the traditional I Ching interpretations this can refer to the dangerous (abyss) use of arms and weapons (Fire).
In the affairs of the world after the dangerous disruptions and earthquakes in Haiti America moved its military in to secure the country and administer aid. While significant humanitarian assistance is one of the primary aims (How to complete repairs and restore order after the earthquake has completed its damage), there are also other fascinating implications. The image fire beneath the dangerous water opens us to another consideration. Along earthquake fault lines like the one in Haiti, are usually great reserves of oil rising from beneath the tectonic plates. Haiti is potentially sitting on one of the greatest oil reserves in the world. If this is so, it will change the course of history. It would imply that the world is not at or even near the end of its oils reserves!
Clarity within and danger without. A new outlook for the progress of the world surfaces that would allow oil based equipment to continue for many years to come. It also leaves us with a greater sense of danger to the waters of life and the environment. If true, will it compromise the implications of the green agenda? What will happen after the initial phase of food, water and medical care is completed?
This is only mentioned here because of the corresponding implications of this hexagram: After Completion.
On a spiritual level, this hexagram implies that one must maintain clarity within and right discrimination without. In other words don’t let the outer darkness stifle your inner light. God is within and God is without! Can there be anywhere that God is not?
While this is true, the focus still must be on the work that allows us to maintain our inner light. Without the inner light, how can we see the workings of God in this world of danger and darkness?
The special implications of this hexagram are that it is the harmonious relationship of the water above to the fire below that is implied, for example as in cooking. Also within this hexagram all the lines are in their appropriate places: solid lines in odd places and broken lines in even places implying a most harmonious and appropriate interaction.
Can we keep our hearts in tact within the abyss of the outer world? This hexagram suggests that it is possible and that this is a very special time where such a balance of perception and action can be achieved.
How do we maintain such a balance without being swayed into deviation?
This comes back to some of the most valuable insight of the Age of Kali (Kali Yuga). This is the age of argument, darkness and weak characters. It is said that in this age of darkness the most secure if not only way to obtain enlightenment is through chanting and repeating God’s name. There are of course many different names in many different languages.
What is implied is that through repeating God’s name we keep our memory of God alive in the present moment and while we do this, the outer darkness is diminished. If everyone could do this for themselves in their own way, what a wonderful world it would be. If maintained for any significant amount of time, it would probably bring about the return of the Golden Age of Love and Light.
When you chant or repeat a name of God, God is there. It’s that simple. When you don’t what are you doing? This can be done out loud or silently. What matters is realizing that it makes a big difference! If the light in the world is to be maintained, it has to start from within each of us by our own will and intent.
New Moon’s represent seed moments in the Sun Moon cycle. In astrology the Moon refers to memories and the past, while the Sun refers to hopes, aspirations and the future. When these two come together in the cycle, then unite for a moment beyond time. The past and the present come together in the present moment. If we can be God conscious and prayerful at such a moment a tremendous affirmation of one’s inner presence can and does occur.
The them of After Completion leaves us with the idea…… if after the completion of sadhana or spiritual development, you become God inspired or enlightened, how would you live and what would you do then? Why would you not do this now?
Chanting on a New Moon is a most auspicious time. Great benefits will result. If one is outwardly discriminating and inwardly focused one become receptive to great visions, inner wisdom and heartfelt emotion. This would certainly be a good completion and a good beginning.
The challenge of completion of the Mayan Calendar is more about how renewal will come and with how much inner quality and light.
In the horoscope of this New Moon, Mercury opposes Mars. This encourages quick decisions, harsh judgements and aggressive actions. The yoga, or challenge for this aspect is to calm the thoughts. Use your outer insights as fuel to search for the inner understanding. Chanting at this New Moon will bring a beneficial sense of calm and peace. Oh Joy to the world!
You can chant on your own, walking down a street, while you are working, or even while making dinner. It puts inner light in all that you do. This is not a hard sell. Have you the wits to see the healing nature of this process? If you see it and do nothing, who are you?
Also in this New Moon horoscope is a conjunction of the Sun and Moon with Neptune. This allows for the potential of great vision and the experience of great dedication and devotion. In the world this can be confusing, but in one’s inner world this borders on rapturous. Being in Aquarius a further focus is on knowledge. What is spiritual knowledge? In the Vedas it is said that the only knowledge is that God is. Anything else is less than knowledge.
This is a time when great inner visions and true spiritual knowledge can shine and manifest. Chanting on this New Moon will increase your inner vibrations and your receptiveness to love and God.
