A fellow coach shared his philosophy of raising kids with me. He said that our role as parents is to give our kids roots and wings. I love that. Roots – to be anchored to a solid foundation. Wings – to soar being what they are inspired to be. This is how my coach colleague raises his family and how he coaches. Grounding and soaring. Brilliant.
What are our roots – what grounds us, makes us feel stable, supported and connected?
I grew up in a large Italian family. Through the noise and commotion, we were given roots. We were raised to understand the value of being in and supporting each member of our family, respecting and caring for others, living a life of service and developing our own beliefs. This grounding was critical to feel anchored in a world that moves at epic speed (we live in the age of the blur). Establishing our core beliefs establishes our foundation, and all great things can be built on a solid foundation.
And even if we were born into a family that doesn’t give us roots, we can develop them ourselves by discovering our talents and passions and anchoring our decisions to what we know about ourselves. As we learn about who we are, we have solid information on which to make life’s decisions. Great if we can get some help – but for those whose families we not able to offer this support, we each are born with the capacity to establish our own roots. We ground ourselves when we know ourselves – our unique abilities. These are true, strong and unmovable. This is what roots are.
How do we develop wings to soar in life?
We learn to show up and be part of each moment of our lives to notice what engages and inspires us, and those things that don’t. We actively learn. We constantly try. We learn to take risks to see our capabilities. Each of these gives us information. We observe, assess, then can decide in what direction to fly to see how high we can go, what we can achieve and how true to ourselves we can be. And we can reach for the stars because we feel connected and supported; we have the confidence to soar.
A great life is one that is grounded but not tethered. Being owned by our things and holding on to the negative events in life holds us down – we are stuck on the ground. But having roots and being grounded to something that matters actually frees us to soar because we know we are supported as we try things, experience life and find our way.
Who helps you stay grounded and encourages you to soar?
Who do you help stay grounded and inspire to soar?
Roots and wings – I love it. Build solid roots then spread your wings and soar. We all can reach greater heights when we know we are well supported.
