The Olympics of Consciousness by Panache Desai

When I think of summer during my growing up years in London, I remember long days playing endless games. With the Olympic Opening Ceremonies last Friday night, quintessential summer has arrived and with it this year, the majesty of the world’s top athletes competing for Olympic Gold in my original back yard. The 2012 Summer Olympics have already exhibited all the pomp and circumstance of a Danny Boyle production. From the tolling of the largest harmonically-tuned bell in Europe to 10,000 volunteers including a parachute jumping, bond-girl Queen to a silver medal winning, show jumping princess, the world’s media has been thrown into a veritable sporting frenzy.

For me it’s not the obvious stories that grab my interest, but the unlikely heroes who burst onto the world stage having seemingly overcome incredible adversity along the way who truly inspire me.

The Blade Runner
Individuals like controversial Oscar Pistorius, a South African sprinter who is also a double amputee. He is known by such monikers as “Blade Runner” and “the fastest man on no legs”. Of Pistorius’ success, Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind person to climb Mount Everest wrote that he was “on the cusp of a paradigm shift in which disability becomes ability, disadvantage becomes advantage. Yet we mustn’t lose sight of what makes an athlete great. It’s too easy to credit Pistorius’ success to technology. Through birth or circumstance, some are given certain gifts, but it’s what one does with those gifts, the hours devoted to training, the desire to be the best, that is at the true heart of a champion.”

Olympic Pride
Irish gymnast Kieran Behan overcame a series of physical injuries – two so severe that doctors told him he would never walk again. “Doctors told me, stop thinking about your crazy dreams … you must accept that it’s all over for you. But I just kept saying: ‘No, no, no — this is not the rest of my life. This is not how it’s going to play out.’ And look at me now, I am an Olympian. They said it was impossible, but I did it.”

Age Will Never Define You
Meet the oldest Olympian in 92 years, Hiroshi Hoketsu who will compete in the individual dressage for Japan’s equestrian team at the age of 71-years-old. “People might expect that I am able to participate for so long because I have special habits. But my secret is to have a good life, enjoy yourself and do the things that make you happy.”

Regardless of their disability, injury or age these brave souls refuse to give up. In the face of it all they continue to exemplify the undeniable power of the human spirit.

And each day we awaken to news stories that highlight triumphs and tragedies of the athletes. Regardless of how long they’ve trained, how careful they are being, what their beliefs are, or how they try and protect themselves, no one is immune. In fact we are witnessing an incredible mirror of our own lives.

Step to the Podium
I see you. I recognize that your journey has also been fraught with challenge and adversity. Time and again you’ve displayed resolute, inner-fortitude and blazed a unique trail. Just like these athletes you are stretching beyond your own reasons and excuses and facing each day as it unfolds. Through the gift of vibrational transformation you are embracing of all your perceived short-comings and challenges, and feeling it all. As energy flows you find your pace. The will to carry on in the face of whatever is unfolding expands. You are transmuting the ordinary into the extraordinary.

You are infinite therefore you don’t give up. You are a gold medal winner among my very own Olympians of Consciousness.
