Life is very short. It can feel very long as you are living it. Most people I speak with are concerned about love; how to love better, how to love their selves, how they could love their children better or even their parents better. However, this love as they are talking about it sounds different. Instead of saying, how can I love my parents better, they say, I am so afraid, or I am so anxious, or I can never remember feeling my mother with me, and I have missed her most of my life. What does this have to do with forgiveness? It has everything to do with forgiveness.

Most of us blame our parents or even our selves for something. Often it lives in life like a rejection of our parents. I had a client the other day that always felt scared and alone and as if something bad was going to happen all around her. We called it the Pig Pen effect from the Peanuts character that had a circle of dirt swirling around him. This client had a circle of fear with knives around her. I asked her what was going on with her mother while she was in her mother’s womb. She told me that her father was in World War II and away, and her mother was living with her mother and father, and she was scared. Her mother was afraid something bad would happen to her father. Just after my client was born, the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and her father came home. These fears lived in her her whole life. Her regret was that she wasn’t better to her mother and that she spent so much time resenting her mother for her weakness and fears. The person she is hardest on is herself. As we spoke about forgiving herself, and showed her mother to her in a greater context of being alone and pregnant with her husband away at war, she was able to also look at her mother with new eyes of love and forgiveness.

Family is where we first experience love, the first place we learn to give it, and the first place we have been hurt by someone we love. That is the place we go to then heal ourselves and find a new space inside to love and forgive ourselves, our parents, and our family. As we learn to shift our story we tell ourselves about our family, we also learn to shift our lives and live in love and happiness.
