READ: A Real Angel by Edie Weinstein

Life’s mysteries are endlessly fascinating to me  and involve Divine timing, since I never know when one will show up to teach me something I may not have learned otherwise. Such was the case tonight, during a book signing for The Bliss Mistress Guide To Transforming the Ordinary Into the Extraordinary. I walked into a store called A Special Gift, little knowing at the time what I gift I was about to receive. The owner, Jeff saw that I had purple, red and black faerie wings that I was going to wear and he offered me an alternative, saying with a twinkle in his eye that he had angel wings that a real angel had left there and that I really should wear them. Who am I to argue with logic like that? So, I donned them and went about doing readings from the book and talking with the customers with the wings on my back.

An hour or so later, I walked outside the store to the small town bustle of a First Friday event. A baby faced man approached me and asked, wide-eyed “Are you a real angel?  I could use one now. Could you find me a place to live?” Gulp. Part of my work is as a social worker, so my rolo-desk brain got down to biz as I asked him questions about his situation and his needs. He was going to be put up in a motel for tonight, by a local support agency. The next night he would be on his own, with the prospect of sleeping in his van. I gave him the number for a local shelter. We spoke about options among his family and friends and it seemed that he had burned bridges with them as a result of mental health challenges. He then asked a heart rending question: “If people adopt animals who are homeless, why don’t they adopt people who are homeless?” Good question. He then asked what would happen if he were to knock on people’s doors and ask if he could stay there. I told him that they would likely call the police. He couldn’t comprehend my answer and further queried “Why?  I wouldn’t hurt anyone.”  At that point, he wandered back to the street.

It left me reeling with amazement. This man showed up to reveal to  me that innocence is not lost and that we can all make a difference in each others’ lives. So, I wonder, who really was the angel here?
