Recently Ian and I were discussing a “family feud”. What is astounding to me is how we can so closely guard our sense of injustice, victim-hood and anger – literally hold onto it for decades regardless of our age. The people involved are now older people – 60 and 70s. “Perhaps it is time to move on before you take it to the grave,” I was thinking as Ian and I were talking. But alas we can not live others lives for them no matter how right we think we are.
We have all felt betrayal, injury and wrong-doing at the hands of others but how we respond to it is perhaps what matters most. Can we forgive and move on? We often have trouble with the idea of forgiveness because we feel like we are letting people off the hook for their bad deeds. We seek a feeling of justice and so we jail them and ourselves by holding onto our bitterness.
Recently I interviewed Olivier Clerc on Possibility 101 on Vivid Life Radio. What I really like about what he talked about was the idea of freeing yourself to love by seeking forgiveness yourself. By letting go of anger we open ourselves to feel more love and I think, attract more great people. When we focus on anger and resentment we tend to attract people that line up to that vibration. We wonder why we keep meeting the same nasty people – because we are holding space for them that is why.
Clerc also spoke about the idea of discrimination – meaning I may forgive someone but it does not mean I welcome them back into my life. He talked about opening your heart AND using your head. This made so much sense to me. There is someone in my life who I have forgiven but I really don’t want to spend time with them. I always felt guilty about that but truly why would I keep welcoming them to repeat the same bad behavior. I let them go with love.
Oscar Wilde said, ” Forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them more.” I think that is so cute but also indicates the freedom WE achieve by letting them go through forgiveness. We no longer have to dance in this partnership of anger. We can go to our graves with an open and loving heart and no sense of regret, remorse or resentment AND live out our lives attracting positive, loving people.
