There is a story of two dogs…
The first dog is an unhappy, mean and angry dog.
One day he walks past a house and looks in to the house to see who is home. He is greeted with angry, snarling dogs and declares, “This is an awful place with many mean dogs. I need to stay away from here, or even destroy it.”
The second dog is a happy dog who sees beauty and friends everywhere he goes. He walks up to the same house and is greeted by only friendly, smiling dogs. He declares, “What a great place. I will have to tell everyone about it.”
The house both dogs visited was a house of mirrors so both dogs saw only themselves reflected back. They saw what they were offering out to the world. The house itself was neither good nor bad it just was. Both dogs interpreted it through their own eyes.
This is such a great story of what we are all doing all the time, every day. We view the world through our own offering of how we feel ourselves. I recently posted on my Facebook page about my Friday experience with Homeland Security in New York – another great example of reflecting what we believe the world is offering us.
I thought this was very friendly and said, “I am fabulous today. How are you doing?”.
Both the officer and Ian, my husband looked at me like I was stoned (not always a good way to approach Customs).
The officer said, “I said WHAT are you doing here today. I don’t care how you are.”
“Oh. I am here to go to Yoga,” I said.
“No kidding,” he said and gave me a half smile.
After we cleared with no problem of course, Ian says, “What were you thinking?”.
“I guess I just thought he was being friendly.”
“You realize that was U.S. Homeland Security?”.
“Happiness is universal – even Customs Officials know how to smile,” I said.
We all have good days and bad days. Some days you do need to protect yourself and offer up a bark but most days we can offer a smiling face to the world and this feels good!
A lovely yogurt server from Pink Berry in NYC (I highly recommend) thanked me for being so nice to him today. This made ME smile. We can decide how we want to see the world – as the friendly dog or the mean dog and you can be sure the world will reflect it back – even in the most unlikely places.
Wishing you a week of unexpected friendships.
