Beginning in February is a great month for opening the heart space and sharing your love. With Valentines’ Day just behind us, we can continue to tune into anahata chakra (the energetic center that resides under the breast bone) and open up to giving and receiving love, kindness and compassion.
When anahata chakra is balanced, we can experience self-love, empathy and feel peaceful and balanced – all great characteristics that enable us to love others freely. If it is closed off, we may experience feelings of jealousy and anger, and be critical and judgmental of others.
Physically, anahata chakra can become blocked because of everyday repetitious activities such as sitting or driving for long periods of time. The chest collapses in and the muscles of the chest (pectorals) and front shoulders (anterior deltoids) get tight and close off the heart space causing an imbalance in anahata chakra.
Try the Partner Pose below to stretch out pectorals and anterior deltoids and open the heart space. It is a great counter stretch for poor posture and you just might find that you feel more love, compassion and kindness towards yourself and others! You can practice this with your partner, a family member, even a co-worker at the office. Step by step instructions for Opening the Heart Space can be found below:
- Grab a Partner!
- Have the ‘flyer’ (Dwayne in the picture provided) stand with feet together and arms outstretched behind them (be mindful of sensitive shoulders and rotator cuff injuries)
- Have the ‘base’ (Krista in the picture provided) stand with knees bent in an athletic stance position and reach forward to grip partner’s wrists
- Inhale together to find a long spine and then exhale to counterbalance – Dwayne will lean forward and Krista will counter that by bending knees and leaning back to support Dwayne’s weight
- Hold the Heart Opening Stretch for five breaths and then switch rolls!
